On March 6th, 2025, during the European Commission’s Ocean Days in Brussels, a dedicated stakeholder consultation session was held on the upcoming EU Water Resilience Strategy (WRS). The event convened over 2000 participants, including EU policymakers, researchers, NGOs, and representatives from industry. Throughout the sessions, stakeholders emphasised the need for a transformational shift in water governance, focused on fostering innovation, circularity, and cross-sectoral collaboration.
Among the initiatives presented during the consultation, the AquaSPICE project – a member of the CIRSEAU cluster – was presented as a flagship example of water-smart industrial practices, offering scalable solutions for sustainable water use and reuse. (AquaSPICE policy brief related to the Water Resilience Strategy – here).
The strategy aims to achieve the transition toward a water-smart economy, contribute to the restoration of the water cycle, and ensure universal access to clean water and sanitation, according to the EU commission officials. While the Parliament will vote its position on the 5th of May, the European Commission aims to release the strategy beginning of June.
